The players only wore helmets in todays practice so it was difficult to judge the physical aspects of the game such as the line play and the linebackers; however, this practice showed that the defense is currently ahead of the offense(which is common this time of year and is makes even more sense since the QB’s and receivers have not had much time to work on there timing). On the defensive side of the ball, Corey Webster and Terrell Thomas each had good practices, not allowing many balls to be completed on them. Hakeem Nicks had a solid practice catching a couple passes from Eli and showing a good chemistry between the two. Here are the rest of the practice highlights:
· In 7 on 7’s
o Eli completed 3 of 5 passes. Two of the completions were to Nicks who showed good route running ability.
o WR number 19 (who is not on the roster handed out in practice but I believe is Tood Warkins) had two nice catches on back to back plays from back up QB Ryan Perrilloux
· Full Offense vs. Defense
o First play was a run to DJ Ware; it is difficult to tell with no pads on but it seemed to be stuffed by the D-Line.
o Corey Webster did a nice job breaking up an Eli Manning pass intended for Nicks. This was followed up by great coverage by Terrell Thomas, which forced another Eli incompletion.
o One of the highlights of the day was a deep completion from Perrilloux to Jernigan for a 60 yards gain
o The offense tried a trick play—a reverse to Hixon who then threw a pass intended for Nicks, but Webster was not fooled and broke up the pass.
o Hixon had a couple of nice catches during practice today.
o QB Sage Rosenfels completed a deep pass for over 50 yards to Devin Thomas for a touchdown.
· Goal-line
o The defense looked very strong forcing Eli to hit his check down on most plays
o Travis Beckum caught a touchdown pass from Rosenfels. Beckum had a nice practice catching a handful of passes.
· General Notes
o In three receiver sets the D-Backs used Aaron Ross and Corey Webster on the outside receivers and Terrell Thomas lined up on the slot receiver.
o Marvin Austin looked quick and explosive, it will be interesting to see him in pads
o Linvel Joseph is the starting defensive tackle replacing Barry Coefield and looked like he did a good job plugging the middle.
o Matt Dodge heard it from the crowd today after another inconsistent practice. He dropped a snap which led to boos from the crowd.
o Hixon muffed a punt today; Jernigan, Joe Burnett and Brian Witherspoon also fielded punts.
I strongly recommend Giants fans to go out to practices whenever possible—the defensive backs were great today after practice signing autographs for anyone interested and there was plenty of space on the bleachers.
Excellent article with great information!
