Die Hard's Analysis of New York Giants 1st Round Pick: Jason Pierre-Paul

By Die Hard - InReeseWeTrust.com 4/23/10
After Rolando McClain and CJ Spiller were off the board, the Giants definitely were going to go for BPA (Best Player Available).  Ernie Accorsi is definitely smiling as the Giants selected Jason Pierre-Paul.  His philosophy of "you can never have too many Defensive Ends," seems to be a mantra for the New York Giants every few years.  The Giants who were devastated by injuries last season, believe that depth at Defensive End is more important than any other position on defense.  Jason Pierre-Paul is a very raw prospect but has a lot of intangibles.  Playing only one full season at South Florida, scouts could see that he is an athletic freak but needs to learn the ropes.  He will probably start out for the Giants as a situational pass rusher on passing downs.  Justin Tuck will bring him under his wing to teach him to be a two-way player.  That is my hope!  Taking a Defensive End at 15 when management says that Osi will be a member of the Giants next year does confuse me a bit.  When you take a player at 15th overall in the first round, I think that player needs to come in and start right away.  Not only is Pierre-Paul not going to start, but he isn't even going to be a backup.  He is a backup to a backup.  That is my only issue with this pick.  I completely agree with Jerry Reese, that the sky is the limit for Pierre-Paul and that he might indeed have the highest ceiling out of any player in the 2010 NFL Draft.  We will just ave to wait and see if Pierre-Paul turns into a defensive force for the New York Giants.
